Radio airwaves can provide a refuge where people feel at ease listening to their favorite music, but they can also carry messages that challenge the way an audience thinks. KSLG program and music director and DJ Sabina Gallier aims to do just that. During commercial breaks at the local radio station, her Black Voices Humboldt PSAs have brought listeners the emotional stories of anonymous contributors recounting racist experiences in Humboldt County.

Wednesday, Black Humboldt and the Eureka NAACP chapter welcomed all to join this year’s Juneteenth celebration at Sequoia Park in Eureka to celebrate freedom, diversity, and community.
Read More“We really want to start fellowship or program where black businesses can get free services to learn how to manage their businesses. And so this brunch is kind of like a way to start that. And we just hold this space exclusively because unique things happen to black folks. And so we share that space here and we can talk about what that looks like. You know, there’s a huge gap in the resources that are available to black owned businesses. And so we’re trying to bridge those gaps with these exclusive spaces, said Mo Mark Ghaly, with Black Humboldt.

Read More“We’re really just trying to bring all the intersections of Blackness together,” said Mo Harper-Desir the co-founder of Black Humboldt. “Celebrating folks in the African diaspora and not kind of concentrating on all the trauma that comes with the story of slavery and concentrating on the liberation and the joy– as we continue to fight for equal rights and freedom.”
