Black Humboldt Presents: “Love Ya’Self Ya’ Majesty”
Local organization Black Humboldt will present “Love Ya’Self Ya’ Majesty”, an online event to celebrate Black Liberation Month. The event will take place Saturday, Feb. 13 via Zoom from 2 to 4 p.m. It’s a special event for the Black and Brown communities in Humboldt County.
Volunteer & Co-founder Monique Harper-Desir hopes that this event strengthens the Black and Brown community here in Humboldt. She says the topics will cover self care and love, mental health, financial tips and more.

Black Humboldt: making Black voices heard
Harper-Desir has lived in Humboldt County since 2015 when she arrived from Massachusetts with her roommate. Having lived in the area for some time she noticed that there wasn’t really a strong Black presence.
“The closest thing that existed was a group called BMEN, which stands for Black Male Empowerment Network but that was exclusively for men,” Harper-Desir said. “As well as the African American Center for Academic Excellence at HSU that provided resources for Black students.”

Radio airwaves can provide a refuge where people feel at ease listening to their favorite music, but they can also carry messages that challenge the way an audience thinks. KSLG program and music director and DJ Sabina Gallier aims to do just that. During commercial breaks at the local radio station, her Black Voices Humboldt PSAs have brought listeners the emotional stories of anonymous contributors recounting racist experiences in Humboldt County.

Humboldt celebrates Juneteenth: Commemorates the ending of slavery
Eureka, Ca., (KIEM) June 19 also known to some as Juneteenth the oldest day known for commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States dating back to 1865.
Wednesday, Black Humboldt and the Eureka NAACP chapter welcomed all to join this year’s Juneteenth celebration at Sequoia Park in Eureka to celebrate freedom, diversity, and community.

Black Humboldt held exclusive brunch for black business as part of the Juneteenth celebration
“We really want to start fellowship or program where black businesses can get free services to learn how to manage their businesses. And so this brunch is kind of like a way to start that. And we just hold this space exclusively because unique things happen to black folks. And so we share that space here and we can talk about what that looks like. You know, there’s a huge gap in the resources that are available to black owned businesses. And so we’re trying to bridge those gaps with these exclusive spaces, said Mo Mark Ghaly, with Black Humboldt.

Black Humboldt hosts Juneteenth celebration
“We’re really just trying to bring all the intersections of Blackness together,” said Mo Harper-Desir the co-founder of Black Humboldt. “Celebrating folks in the African diaspora and not kind of concentrating on all the trauma that comes with the story of slavery and concentrating on the liberation and the joy– as we continue to fight for equal rights and freedom.”
