HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)- Today marks the federal observance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the US.
Juneteenth events took place both today and over the weekend in Arcata to mark the holiday.
Black Humboldt put on a free community party in Arcata Plaza on Sunday. That celebration included music, food, arts and culture as well as street vendors and a kid’s zone.
This year, Juneteenth also coincided with Father’s Day and the theme of the local celebration was ‘honoring black fathers.
And the festivities continued today Black Humboldt held a special brunch for black business leaders in the community.
“We really want to start fellowship or program where black businesses can get free services to learn how to manage their businesses. And so this brunch is kind of like a way to start that. And we just hold this space exclusively because unique things happen to black folks. And so we share that space here and we can talk about what that looks like. You know, there’s a huge gap in the resources that are available to black owned businesses. And so we’re trying to bridge those gaps with these exclusive spaces, said Mo Mark Ghaly, with Black Humboldt.
