Arts for Black and Brown Bodies
As most of you know, Black Humboldt is wrapping up the month long series, we offer, called Arts for Black and Brown Bodies. Where all month long we will offer exclusive space for POCs to learn new art skills, perform, present their art and embellish in their excellence in space exclusive to POCs.
Some themes we included this series is:
Painting
Photography
Multiple dance genres
Theater
Song-writing
Poetry
Open mic sessions
Yoga
&more.
This would be the second time we’ve introduced the series and we think twice a year is a great schedule to maintain for the project. Although we didn’t get the large turn outs we would have like to see, the small intimate attendance we did receive was beautiful, exclusive and ultimately, a safe space, which is the main goal. We were able to share laughter, conversation and stories while creating together, sharing our art or moving our bodies.
This series is especially important because it places Black and Brown bodies in spaces we don’t normally see them, or are often dominated by non POC bodies and cultures. Representation is important, especially for those yearning and dreaming of a life, they don’t see people like themselves already a part of. Black Humboldt is working to normalize, Black and Brown arts, art forms and community members within art spaces.
Through this series we’ve made some new POC business connections, like Alpha Fitness in Eureka CA and gained new allies as local organizations were more than willing to donate goods for our raffles!
