Building black community (BBlack)

BBlack is a black led, grassroots organization established during the summer of 2020 to collectively address issues of community safety facing the Black community in Humboldt County. BBlack’s primary focus is on supporting existing local black leadership, creating conditions that make it easy for the emergence of new black leadership and supporting black led organizational collaborations that strengthen collective leadership.

Black Male Entertainment Network (B.MEN)

hc Black Music & arts association

Mission: We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for Black and Brown bodies, with the mission of empowering the youth through Black cultural knowledge and Black support to promote Cultural Healing, Black Community Resilience and Black Sovereignty Rights.
We resonate with the Indigenous People of Color and the shared struggles from the white dominant culture. Through the Harambee movement (and the collaboration of People of Color) we gain resiliency, respect, self-love, and self-determination.

Purpose: The purpose of HCBMAA is to cultivate a safe nurturing space for Youth and Families of Color in Humboldt County and increase cultural identity to our youth through workshops, restorative circles, cultural practices, and community outreach. We promote community resilience and sustainability through Black education and Afrocentric practices. Together, we foster a broader understanding of the contributions of persons of African descent in all fields of music, drumming, storytelling, and cultural arts. We believe in advocating and educating our youth with Black knowledge to promote health and wellness.

Black to our roots

Black to our Roots assists afro-descendant students with both genetic and genealogical methods of research to further their knowledge of the people, places, and cultures that have informed their present ethno-cultural identity. Through the collective reconstruction, preservation, and reconnection of Afro- diasporic histories to Afro-descendant students, participants will gain a comprehensive historical understanding of their cultural heritage; a trait that has been proven to improve academic performance as well as mental health in students.

Pathways of Purpose

Cal poly humboldt- Umoja center for pan african excellence

The Umoja Center for Pan African Student Excellence stands on the seven pillars of the Nguzu Saba : Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self determination), Ujima (Collective work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Collective economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), Imani (Faith).  The Center is a Pan African cultural community of students who self identify with any the diverse identities represented within the African diaspora. We are part of an effort to elevate the level of African diasporic knowledge. This cultural community seeks to uplift and support its students academically, professionally and personally through advising and mentorship.  Our events and programs provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge of: self, scholarship rooted in Pan African epistemologies and occasions to celebrate and learn together. Through guest lectures, films and events the Center's programs educate the campus community about the Pan African diasporic experience.  Not holding a identity of African heritage does not disqualify anyone from participation in any events or programs, we value cultural exchange and invite people from other backgrounds to ground with us.
